After seeing one of these knives in action at a recent house party, I was amazed at how well it seemed to perform on different types of foods.
I asked my friend if I could borrow her knife for a couple of days to see how well it does and whether or not it is something I would buy in the future. This review will outline my personal experience with the Shun knife and the main features and benefits offered to you if you decide to try it out.
Features and Benefits According to Shun
- Long blade. The 6.5” Japanese Santoku blade is ideally crafted and sharpened to give precision slices, dices and chops.
- Scalloped edge. You know how frustrating it can be when food gets stuck to the knife, but with a scalloped edge, the pieces fall right off of the Shun Premier.
- Rust-proof. The sixteen layers of stainless steel that are applied to this blade gives it a beautiful finish and prevents rust from ruining your investment.
- Pakkawood handle. This reliable D-shaped handle is ergonomically designed and comes with a convenient offset steel bolster.
- Forever reliable. With a lifetime warranty, you never have to worry about the knife breaking or becoming unusable in any way.
My Personal Experience with the Shun Premier Santoku Knife
Forged by Japan’s most well-known blade manufacturer, the Shun Premier Santoku Knife is created by fusing sixteen layers of high-carbon stainless steel to a reinforced steel core. This design prevents rust and keeps your investment looking as good as the day you bought it, plus it makes it incredibly sharp and durable.
The Shun knife wipes clean without incident; the scalloped edge creates air pockets when food slides by it, preventing slices from sticking to the blade during and after use.
Shun knives are unique in their design and also are used extensively in commercial kitchens. You and your family deserve a high-grade knife for use in and around the kitchen.
The Shun Premier is extremely sharp and therefore it is important to use caution when handling it. It is well-balanced and doesn’t feel awkward in your hand. I was able to cut and slice very quickly once finding the right balance of the knife in my hand and the fact that fewer cut pieces of food were sticking to the knife helped out even more.
If you need a strong, sharp, professional knife and can afford the price, the Shun Premier definitely gives you increased flexibility when compared to what you can do with a traditional knife.
After using it for several days, I absolutely love this knife; it has completely changed how I am looking at fruits and vegetables and am back in the kitchen mixing fruit salads and topping my dinners with slices of carrots, cucumbers and tomatoes. While it is rather pricey for just the one knife, those who know how important and useful a sharp blade can be will happily make the investment.
I do have a couple of complaints in regards to the Shun Santoku knife, with the primary one being that it is in fact, not a Santoku knife. The curved design of the knife is contradictory to Santoku’s flat style, making it Santoku in name only. Also, because of the thin layers of stainless steel coated to the blade, chips can occur; it did not happen while I was using it, but the blade had a couple of chips when I picked it up from my friend.
What other people are saying about Shun Premier Santoku Knife…
“This is simply the finest knife I have ever had the pleasure of owning. I compared it with my existing set of knives and to put it bluntly (pardoning the pun), the Shun Premier is simply on another planet. It’s a piece of art which makes chopping veg and fruit a doddle. It slides through whatever I cut like it was warm butter. Amazing. I have no hesitation in recommending this item.”
“The Shun Premier Santoku Knife is a great knife. It is well built and very high in quality. I bought it to thinly slice items like onions–and it works well. I can make near paper thin slices that fall right off the knife. It is exceptionally sharp, which for me is great.”
“I did extensive research into German or Japanese knives and I am very glad I went Japanese! This knife is AMAZING! It is extremely sharp, right out of the package. For the 4th of July I made my first gumbo which took A LOT of slicing and chopping. This knife glided through everything I threw at it. I am in love. This knife will be an heirloom I will pass on to my children.”
